IIC launches Energy Efficiency Program in Colombia

IIC’s GREENPYME program will help Colombian SMEs become more energy efficient and ecofriendly

Bogotá, Colombia, April 11, 2014 — The Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC) has launched its GREENPYME program in Colombia, aiming to help local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) from energy-intensive sectors achieve greater energy efficiency. A group of 40 companies  will be selected to be part of a first round of energy audits which will help them identify opportunities to cut down their energy consumption.

“The GREENPYME program supports SMEs through energy audits, consultant reports, and technical and viability assessments. In addition, participating companies may also receive financing to implement necessary energy efficiency measures,” noted Paula Urbano, Trust Fund Specialist at the IIC. “There is a real need for the innovative advisory services provided by this program since SMEs in Latin America and the Caribbean still consume a large amount of high-cost energy inefficiently. This cost can be key to business viability.”

At the launch event, local companies shared their first-hand experiences on the implementation of energy efficiency measures highlighting how they improved their production activities. Juan Carlos Campos Avella, Division Manager of Energy Efficiency with Colombian energy consultancy e2 Energía Eficiente noted that “We are very pleased to be a partner in this initiative of the IIC. We look at the GREENPYME program as an opportunity to bring the new culture of energy efficiency into the Colombian industry, providing concrete solutions and identifying opportunities for improvements in energy performance through operational activities, maintenance, planning, production management, and clean technology.”

GREENPYME is an IIC program that helps SMEs become more competitive by promoting energy efficiency and clean technologies. The program operates in seven countries across Latin America and the Caribbean and has provided detailed energy audits to more than 100 companies since its inception in 2008. In Colombia, the 40 SMEs selected for energy audits will also be able to attend an energy forum and access practical tools to improve their competitiveness in a market with high and volatile energy prices.

GREENPYME in Colombia receives financial support from the Clean Technology Fund (CTF). One of the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), the CTF provides middle income countries with highly concessional resources to explore options to scale up the demonstration, deployment, and transfer of low carbon technologies in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable transport.
