CABCORP is a holding company created by the Castillo Monge family, a well-known Guatemalan business group, to hold share control over their soft drink bottling companies in Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. CABCORP-Guatemala has the exclusive rights to produce, bottle and distribute PepsiCo products throughout Guatemala through its three bottling plants (Mariposa, Atlántico and Sur). The project consisted of financing capital investments required over the 1998-2000 period for the Guatemalan soft drink bottling operations of The Central American Bottling Corporation (CABCORP) and refinancing part of its existing short term debt. The loan consisted of an A loan of US$ 10 million to be provided by IIC and a B loan of US$lO million provided by other international financial institutions. The capital investments was used toward the acquisition of new manufacturing equipment, distribution vehicles, refrigeration equipment, new distribution centers, and improvement of CABCORP’s information systems. In addition to the capital investment component, CABCOW-Guatemala refinance US$l O million of its short term debt in order to strengthen its balance sheet by increasing the maturity of its debt.
