IIC, Regional FINPYME ExportPlus Agents meet in Washington, D.C.

IIC and export associations from Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua met to design practical, business-oriented export programs for the region’s SMEs.

Washington, D.C.- On June 7-8, 2011, the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC) invited its regional agents from Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Nicaragua to kick-off the FINPYME ExportPlus program for those countries.

Financed by the Korea-IIC SME Development Trust Fund, FINPYME ExportPlus, will provide SMEs with technical assistance to improve their ability to export. The program, which will include practical and solution-oriented workshops, will be tailored to reflect each country’s specific needs.

Three agencies, each representing the export sectors of Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Nicaragua, met over the course of two days to draw up a working plan for the program. "We are truly excited for the prospects of FINPYME ExportPlus because the ideas and realities of our country are being taken into consideration from the launching stage and this means that not only will we have an effective program that brings real results, but also, we are laying the groundwork for a long-term working relationship between Costa Rica and the IIC," Monica Araya, President of the Costa Rican Chamber of Exporters (CADEXCO) noted during the meetings.

Similar thoughts were shared by Kary Van Der Horst, Executive Director of the Dominican Exporters Association (ADOEXPO) as she added that "We believe ADOEXPO and the IIC can bring synergy to the SME support initiatives in the Dominican Republic, especially to those exporting and with interest in doing so. The SMEs are traditionally an easily overlooked area in economic development and the IIC's dedication to this specific sector is critical for the entrepreneurs of our country."

Azucena Castillo de Solano, General Manager of the Association of Producers and Exporters of Nicaragua (APEN) commented "I am sure that the IIC, with our input, will implement in the future new and innovative programs for SMEs in Nicaragua, which will result in tangible benefits for all. FINPYME ExportPlus is just the beginning."
