IIC Reaffirms Its Support For Haiti’S Agriculture Sector During A Loan Signing Ceremony With Carifresh S.A.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti – On October 1, 2009, the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC) and Carifresh, S.A. held a signing ceremony for a US$300,000 loan from the IIC. Carifresh supplies quality agricultural products, mainly mango, for the export market and corn, yucca, and haricot beans for the local market.

Carifresh is a wholly owned Haitian company. The IIC loan will assist Carifresh in improving its infrastructure and production, and will provide stability in funding its working capital needs.

"In markets like Haiti, agriculture is an important sector that generates employment and export earnings and provides basic foodstuffs. It is also a segment that contains many SMEs. Through this loan to Carifresh, the IIC is demonstrating its commitment to support small producers with long-term financing so they can successfully compete in the international marketplace," said John Beckham, IIC Corporate Projects and Financial Institutions Coordinator.

The signing ceremony took place at the Karibe Hotel in Port-au-Prince. Signing for Carifresh S.A. was the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Wilhelm Reimers. Jacques Rogozinski, General Manager, signed for the IIC

The IIC is a multilateral financial institution that is a member of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Group. It provides financing (in the form of equity investments, loans, guarantees, and other instruments) and advisory services to private enterprises in Latin America and the Caribbean. In 2008, the IIC reached US$1.5 billion in assets and approved sixty-four operations channeling US$300.5 million to SMEs in the region. The IIC’s mission is to promote the economic development of its regional member countries by encouraging the establishment, expansion, and modernization of private enterprises, particularly those that are small and medium in size.
