Event reaffirms IIC’s support for initiatives that benefit the environment and foster sustainable development in Central America

Tegucigalpa, Honduras - On April 16, 2008, the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC) organized a seminar for the Honduran association of small renewable energy producers Asociación Hondureña de Pequeños Productores de Energía Renovable (AHPPER). The goal was to inform these SMEs about the new Certified Emission Reductions Sale and Purchase Agreement (CERSPA). The CERSPA initiative seeks to help carbon credit sellers participate in the international carbon market on equal footing with more experienced buyers.

For the IIC, such seminars are a tool for promoting climate change-related projects in Latin America and the Caribbean. The IIC has been stepping up its support for projects that generate carbon credits, by providing sponsoring companies with financing and non-reimbursable technical assistance. The IIC is one of the few international finance institutions that have used carbon credit revenue as a credit enhancement.

The seminar was funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). The working sessions were taught by Climate Focus, a consulting firm specialized in carbon credits; Manzano y Asociados, an Ecuadoran law firm; and IIC environmental engineer Ángela Miller. The seminar was attended by Honduran government authorities; members of the private business community; Empresa Nacional de Energía Eléctrica; Asociación de Municipios de Honduras; Cámara de Comercio e Industria de Tegucigalpa; and Consejo Hondureño de la Empresa Privada, among others.

Xiomara Pinto, executive director of AHPPER, thanked the IIC for its support: "This Inter-American Investment Corporation initiative will ensure that sales of certified emission reductions continue in Honduras. It will also make it easier for us to tap new markets and serve as a guide for strengthening existing markets."

The Inter-American Investment Corporation is a multilateral financial institution that is a member of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Group. It provides financing (in the form of equity investments, loans, guarantees, and other instruments) and advisory services to private enterprises in Latin America and the Caribbean. The IIC’s mission is to promote the economic development of its regional member countries by stimulating the establishment, expansion, and modernization of private enterprises, particularly those that are small and medium in size.
