IIC workshops train over 600 participants in environmental issues and energy efficiency

Panama City, Panama, October 4, 2012 — The Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC) celebrated its third annual Sustainability Week with two workshops in Panama, training representatives from 25 financial institutions in 13 countries in how to increase their energy efficiency and sustainability.

“Since our first workshop on environmental risk management more than a decade ago, the IIC has trained some 600 participants from over 220 financial institutions,” noted Angela Miller, the IIC’s lead environmental engineer.

The first workshop this year focused on reducing businesses’ environmental and social risks. The participants also learned how to take advantage of environmental and risk management strategies to boost their competitiveness. The workshop was organized with the Environmental Safeguards Unit of the Inter American Development Bank (IDB).

The purpose of the second workshop was to offer over 70 small and medium-sized enterprises, NGOs, and other entities from the region the tools necessary for reducing their energy costs and environmental footprint. Banco General, a private Panamanian bank, collaborated in the workshop.

In recent years, the IIC has worked with other financial institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean to raise public awareness about climate change and energy efficiency and to promote the use of renewable energy sources. Banco General has been a key partner in these training workshops.
